Chinook Customer Completes Mount Vernon Police Department (MVPD) Citizens Academy with Passion and Purpose

From January 30 to April 17, Chinook customer Jacob took part in the Mount Vernon Police Department’s annual Citizens Academy. With the support of his mother and his job coach, Em Waters, Jacob completed the 12-week program with a clear goal in mind: to prepare for a volunteer role with the department’s Citizens on Proactive Patrol (COPP) program.

Driven by a deep commitment to safety and community service, Jacob eagerly embraced the opportunity to learn more about local policing and how MVPD collaborates with partner agencies and residents to serve the Mount Vernon area. Throughout the course, he participated in a variety of hands-on learning experiences. These included shadowing a 911 dispatcher, touring the local jail and courthouse, and attending MVPD’s Mock Scene Day at Mount Vernon High School.

Mock Scene Day was a particular highlight for Jacob. He took part in simulated crime scene walkthroughs, mock traffic stops, and practiced using police radio equipment. He also had the chance to operate a tactical drone and get an up-close look at MVPD’s armored vehicle and other specialized tools.

Over the duration of the academy, Jacob formed strong connections with MVPD officers and fellow community members who share his passion for public safety. One memorable moment came when officers visited Jacob’s home to demonstrate patrol equipment and assist him in installing new speed limit signs in his neighborhood—a project that meant a great deal to him.

Jacob takes neighborhood safety seriously. He regularly patrols his area and the nearby Eaglemont community alongside his father and loyal Labrador Retriever, Ruby, watching for safety hazards and signs of illegal dumping. His goal is to help create a clean, safe environment for all who live there.

Looking ahead, Jacob and his job coach will continue working with MVPD to develop a volunteer role that aligns with Jacob’s interests and strengths. Both Jacob and Em extend heartfelt thanks to the MVPD officers who volunteered their time for the class, as well as Sergeant Aaron Cohen for his dedication and support in helping Jacob achieve his goal of completing the Citizens Academy, and for his ongoing commitment to the success of all participants.
