Expanding Employment for All: Chinook’s Kansas City Visit

To celebrate the start of fall and the successful wrap-up of our initial consulting engagement, Chinook Enterprises returned to Kansas City in Mission, KS, this time with fresh eyes and deeper connections.

Our team toured several supportive employers partnering with Down Syndrome Innovations (DSI), a visionary organization committed to expanding employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. This visit was part of our collaboration with goWise.org and the KU Center on Disabilities, IHDPS, and KDADS through the Employment First Project

One highlight was our interview with The Golden Scoop, a joyful, inclusive ice cream and coffee shop that provides meaningful employment for people with unique abilities. Their model inspired us deeply, showing how creativity and purpose can transform lives and communities.

We also explored hospitality apprenticeships at local hotel chains and learned about patient service representative roles at KU Medical Center and the University of Kansas Hospital. Each stop reinforced the power of inclusive hiring and the ripple effect it creates.

And yes, we had our first bites of Chick-fil-A while admiring their innovative paid internship program, “Flourish,” which offers hands-on experience and career development for young adults with disabilities.

We’re incredibly grateful to have been part of this journey and look forward to continuing our work across the nation to make #EmploymentForAll a reality.
